  • How is your social life as a volunteer? - AIESEC
up in the airport but I had no idea that there would be a crowd of people surrounding me from the second I put my foot in Quito It was amazing Me and the other volunteers from AIESEC After this splendid welcome in the airport we all went to the car that would take us to the city centre The driver Byron from the local committee rolled down all of the car windows turned on some very load reggaeton and took off into the Ecuadorian mountains apparently speeding is of little importance in Ecuador In the car we already made plans for the next day a guided city tour in the city centre of Quito This was just the first plan out of many and I loved that my Latino adventure started right away with a bunch of nice people A walk on top of an active volcano called Volcán Pichincha While I was there we were five volunteers working in different programs In my particular foundation we were three volunteers from AIESEC and one Danish girl from a different organization All of my nervousness about travelling on my own and my concerns about being alone in my free time were definitely put to shame because of AIESEC To facilitate social life and of course knowledge of Ecuador AIESEC Ecuador had made a cultural agenda which meant that they organized some sort of activity each weekend for the volunteers For example We did a city tour on my first real day in Quito We had litres of canelazo a hot alcoholic beverage made out of sugar cane while singing karaoke We climbed volcanoes We rode on horseback through mountains And the list goes on A football match in bumperz in the city centre of Quito Horseback riding on Volcán Pichincha The two biggest problems I faced being with the other volunteers were the language since everyone except me was from Latin America and then what I have named latino time I never had any doubts that the other volunteers were going to show up for social activities but I never knew when Apparently Latino time isn t like European time At all It s like they never really learned what a clock looks like or maybe they just can t tell time because they are without exceptions always late Maybe it s because we are slaves to time in most parts of Europe but believe me I have been waiting for several hours for the others to show up And it certainly doesn t help that Ecuador doesn t even have a timetable for buses But along the way I learned to be just as late as the others and now it s actually a tricky habit to get rid of back home in Denmark What a lucky thing that AIESEC provides a reintegration seminar when you return back home The boat where I lived for 5 days while visiting many different Galápagos Islands Well to sum up I can

  • IMPROVE YOUR CV WHILE VOLUNTEERING ABROAD - AIESEC
even though I had read about weekly abductions of tourists and a lot of robberies in daylight I left that part out when I told my parents where I was going The position in Quito started on the 18 th of January so I was in a hurry with less than 3 weeks to go I couldn t face 1 5 months of vacation in freezing cold Denmark I really wanted to go somewhere warm But I had promised myself that I had to stay in Aarhus and to find a job where I could practise my skills within my line of studies before graduating And my CV really needed it as well But then it hit me Why not combine the two After applying AIESEC invited me to some different meetings where they among other things told me about going abroad with them we did a list of things I wanted and expected to learn while being away they told me about customs culture and everyday life in Ecuador and that the Panama hat is actually from Ecuador And finally we signed a contract I was ready to go In the volunteering program AIESEC provides a host family at least one meal a day and a representative from the local committee to pick you up in the airport I just had to buy the flight tickets myself and then they arranged the rest It was easy but also kind of weird not being in control of where I was going to sleep for the next 6 weeks I was picked up in the airport after 16 hours of flying by 6 7 people Most of them were from AIESEC Ecuador but some of them were trainees like me Because I applied so late the local committee didn t have
