    The Archives Sleeping woman in antique dress 1813 Oil on canvas 44 5 x 39 2 cm Inventory number B209 Works relating to this work C W Eckersberg The Dream of Alcyone sketch 1813 Stiftung Schleswig Holsteinische Landesmuseen Gottorf Castle Germany Enlarge photo This is perhaps the most beautiful of the Eckersberg paintings in the museum but it is and will always remain a fragment of a larger composition Eckersberg was in 1813 working on two scenes from Ovid s Metamorphoses both of which had Alcyone as their main figure One of them now in Statens Museum for Kunst shows her waving farewell to her husband Ceyx as he sails away The other was to have shown the sleeping Alcyone receiving the message in a dream that Ceyx had died at sea To emphasis the restless sleep of the main figure Eckersberg placed a peacefully sleeping servant girl in the foreground And this is who this fragment shows For Eckersberg was never satisfied with his work and therefore decided to cut out and save the successful section with the servant girl The fragment suggests that the artist abandoned the Alcyone painting before finishing it The painting of the floor the

    Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg Born 02 01 1783 Died 22 07 1853 Nationality dansk Read about the artist in The Archives Thorvaldsen s arrival in the Copenhagen roadstead September 17th 1838 1839 Oil on canvas 71 9 x 96 2 cm Inventory number B217 Enlarge photo Download Search the work in The Archives This picture provides an impression of the honour paid to Bertel Thorvaldsen on his return to Denmark Over 40 years had elapsed since as a young and unknown artist from poor circumstances he had gone out into the world in 1797 and made his fortune In Rome he had become a world famous artist though without forgetting his little native country far to the north On the contrary he had decided both to return home and to donate his sculptures and his other collections to his native city of Copenhagen on condition that a museum should be built there in which his collections could be preserved and exhibited So it is no wonder that the reception was turned into a day of popular rejoicing Eckersberg s painting shows the white haired Thorvaldsen in the captain s barge on his way ashore from the frigate Rota The harbour basin

    the artist in The Archives View from Veyrier over Lake Geneva towards the Jura mountains 1777 1779 Oil on canvas 116 4 x 86 9 cm Inventory number B239 Enlarge photo Download Juel s speciality was portraiture But he perhaps had the greatest art historical importance by virtue of the landscape painting in which he specialised alongside the commissions for portraits Academy pupils from both Denmark Eckersberg and J P Møller Norway Dahl and northern Germany P O Runge and Caspar David Friedrich found in it a solid foundation on which to develop their respective national schools of landscape painting in the first half of the 19th century The painting with the big solitary tree is the biggest landscape Juel ever made In 1772 Juel received a travel grant enabling him to travel through Hamburg Dresden Vienna Rome and Paris from where he went on to Geneva together with the engraver J F Clemens The two towers in the right background of the painting are those of St Peter s Cathedral at Geneva Clemens was the picture s first owner and it has been suggested that he received it as a wedding present from Juel commemorating their time together in

    The Thorvaldsen Collection at Nysø Google Art Project Luk Johan Thomas Lundbye Born 01 09 1818 Died 25 04 1848 Nationality dansk Landscape at Arresø looking towards the sand dunes at Tisvilde 1838 Oil on canvas 94 2 x 125 5 cm Inventory number B253 Enlarge photo In 1836 Lundbye s father had been appointed commander of what was known as the Army Rocket Corps His official residence lay between the Arresø valley and the village of Vinderød just outside Frederiksværk When painting this picture Lundbye has stood on the stretch of meadowland below Vinderød and looked north The shifting sand hills in the distance are today covered with trees and are known as Tisvilde Hegn The picture is a hymn to the open Danish landscape that contains many of the components so beloved of the Romantics natural beauty the past represented by the piles of stones in the foreground which are undoubtedly the remains of an ancient burial mound peasants children animals and beautiful clouds The painting was well received by the critics and must be counted the work with which Lundbye made his breakthrough It was bought by the Copenhagen Art Society where Thorvaldsen was fortunate enough to
